How GOG Detection Works In Kolektor
GOG installs can leave useful information in Windows even when you are not using the optional client as your main library screen. Kolektor’s GOG scanner starts with Windows registry records because GOG installers commonly register the game name, product ID, install path, executable path, and related launch information there.
That matters for real PC setups. Many GOG players choose custom folders, separate drives, or preservation-oriented install paths. A library app should not assume every game lives under one default directory.
Kolektor also checks common GOG installation folders as a backup. It can read goggame-*.info files inside game folders when they are present, then use that information to identify the game and find a playable executable. Registry records take priority because they usually contain the more complete local install data, but the folder pass helps cover edge cases.

Launch Preferences For GOG Games
GOG is one of the configurable launch platforms in Kolektor. In Launch Preferences, platforms like Steam, Epic Games, GOG, Ubisoft, and Battle.net can use either the platform client route or Direct Launch when a usable executable path is available.
For GOG, that flexibility is important because GOG games often work well from the executable, while some setups still benefit from the platform client route. Kolektor’s GOG launch handling tries to respect the preference you choose.
If you choose Direct Launch, Kolektor tries the game executable first and can fall back to the GOG protocol when a game has the needed platform ID. If you choose the client route, Kolektor can use the platform route when the client is installed, then fall back to the executable when that is the better available path. If neither path works but the install folder exists, Kolektor can open the folder so you are not left without a next step.
The practical rule is simple: start with the reliable path, then switch individual platform behavior when your local GOG games launch cleanly another way. Some games are simple standalone executables. Others still need supporting files, redistributables, overlays, or platform behavior. Kolektor gives you the control without pretending every GOG install behaves the same.
Covers, Metadata, And Game Details
GOG games are often easier to recognize by cover art than by folder names. Kolektor supports automatic cover art, and beta 4 added IGDB metadata, the Game Details panel, screenshots, and trailers.
Scan and metadata are separate jobs. Scan answers which games are installed. Metadata answers what those games are, how they should look, and what context helps you choose one. A GOG classic with a vague folder name becomes more useful when it has a cover, description, genre, developer, publisher, screenshots, and a clear platform source.
Kolektor also supports manual correction. If a title, sort title, cover, executable path, install folder, or IGDB match needs adjustment, you can edit the game or manage the match instead of accepting a bad record forever.
That matters for older PC games because names, editions, remasters, and launch files can be messy. We built the edit and details surfaces so the library can become cleaner over time, not only larger after every scan.
What To Do When A GOG Game Is Missing
Automatic detection should cover normal installed GOG games, but Windows libraries are not always clean. If a GOG title does not appear in Kolektor after scanning, start with the local install state:
- Confirm the game is installed on this Windows PC, not only owned in your GOG account.
- Open the game once from its normal GOG install path to confirm the install is healthy.
- Run Scan again after installing, moving, repairing, or restoring the game.
- Check whether the install folder still contains the expected game files.
- Use manual add for unusual folders, modded builds, standalone executables, or games that no longer look like normal GOG installs.
Manual add is not a failure path. It is part of how Kolektor handles real libraries. A unified launcher should support both platform detection and the odd local install that only makes sense on your machine.
GOG Beside The Rest Of Your PC Library
A dedicated GOG filter is useful, but the bigger value appears when GOG is not alone. Many Windows players have Steam as the main habit, Epic for claimed games and exclusives, GOG for DRM-free titles, Xbox Game Pass for subscription installs, publisher launchers for specific franchises, Amazon Games for claimed titles, and manual folders for standalone games.
